Padel is a sport that is becoming increasingly popular around the world. Padel has attracted numerous top players; many would-be padel players have been exposed to the sport. This has led to a rise in padel schools, clubs, and enthusiasts worldwide. This will lead to a more competitive professional scene that, at the same time, will each time lead to new feats in the form of records.
The list is very varied, which is something we can expect from a sport such as padel. Let’s take a look at the current records!
Table of Contents
Longest marathon playing padel
A game of padel tennis has a varied duration depending on the level of its players. A game of amateur players can last an hour or less. On the other hand, a professional game easily exceeds two and a half hours.
Well, in Belgium, more specifically in Brugge, they have decided to play padel for a little longer. Kevin Caestecker, Christophe Meulebrouck, Frederik Boi, and Pieter Cools played an uninterrupted game of padel tennis for 28 hours, 25 minutes, and 30 minutes on September 18, 2021. Thus holding the world record.
Largest padel tournament
If you ever thought that very few people play padel tennis, maybe this record will make you change your mind. In the town of San Sebastián de Los Reyes, the largest padel tournament in the world was held with a participation of no less than 678 participants.
The tournament was held for 8 days, from October 4 to 12, 2014 by the Estrella Damm Padel Circuit. The winning pair of the tournament was formed by Hammer and Garcia Vericat.
Highest attendance in a padel match
Padel is a relatively new sport, but it has been arousing the interest of many people with great speed. This can be seen in records such as the one achieved at the Palau Sant Jordi venue in Barcelona (Spain) on the occasion of the first semifinal of the men’s tournament of the Estrella Damm Master Final between Fernando Belasteguín and Agustín Tapia against the local Juan Lebrón and Paquito Navarro. A total of 9,585 fans attended the event.
In just two sets, the winning pair was Fernando Belasteguín and Agustín Tapia. This happened on December 21, 2019, surpassing Madrid’s previous record of 7,500 people a year earlier. Surely this will be the earliest record to be broken since this year; the Stockholm Open will be held at the Tele2 Arena in the Swedish capital with a maximum capacity of 33,000 people as part of the World Padel Tour.
Fernando Belasteguín
Fernando Belasteguín is an Argentine player considered by many to be the best padel player in history. To his credit, he has several records:
- No. 1 of the youngest ranking: He reached the number 1 position of the World Padel Tour ranking at the age of 22.
- Unbeaten streak: Together with Juan Martin Diaz, they are the only couple to be undefeated for 1 year and 9 months. This happened between September 2005 and May 2007, winning 22 consecutive tournaments.
- Couple with the most tournaments won: Also, as a partner of Juan Martin Diaz, they hold the record of 170 tournaments won.
- Consecutive time as No. 1 in the ranking: Together with Juan Martin Diaz, they occupied first place in the world ranking of the best couple in the world for 13 years, from 2002 to 2015.
Youngest female player to win top competition title
This record is held by the Spanish-born in Malaga, Bea González, winning the Madrid Open 2019 with her partner Martita Ortega at just 18 years of age.
Youngest male player to win a top competition title
Valladolid-born Spaniard Arturo Coello achieved this record. With Fernando Belasteguín as a couple, he conquered the Miami Open 2022 at only 19 years of age. He broke the record set by Agustín Tapia at the Madrid Open 2019 at the age of 20.
All these records are a reflection of the legacy of many of these athletes in padel. It is to be expected that many of these records will be broken in the future as the padel continues with its expansion. Although some of them will surely last for many years.
